Boston Mayor Mayor Wu Responds to President Trump's Threat to Relocate FIFA World Cup Matches from Boston

Boston's mayor, Michelle Wu, suggested that the municipality was ready for a face-off with President Donald Trump concerning his assertion that he could order FIFA to remove World Cup games from Gillette Stadium, situated approximately 35 kilometers southwest of Boston.

Mayor Wu spoke on a Boston-based podcast this week to answer comments from the Trump administration, which had described her as "far-left." President Trump had threatened that he would contact FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "address its issues."

A great deal of it is locked down by agreement so that no one, even the president, can change it.

She continued, "We live in a time where for attention, for control, for pushing the boundaries ... ongoing threats ... are issued at individuals and communities who stand their ground and submit or follow along to a hateful agenda."

She also remarked, "We are going to continue being who we are, and that means, sadly, we are going to be part of a discussion that is challenging Boston's values." She finished by stressing her commitment for the city, declaring, "Fully committed for Boston."

The President's Comments and FIFA's Involvement

Recently, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was photographed alongside Trump at the Gaza summit in Egypt. The FIFA president has also visited the Oval Office and presented World Cup and club championship awards to the president as presents.

Earlier, President Trump was asked about recent disturbances in a Boston neighborhood that included a police car being set on fire. He replied, "If things aren't handled well, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Gianni – the head of FIFA, who's great."

Trump added, "I would say: 'Let's move into another location' and they would do that. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it without hesitation." Trump also specifically targeted Wu, stating, "Boston's mayor is not good ... she's far-left, and they're dominating some areas in Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"

Previous Warnings and 2026 World Cup Details

Trump has made previous comments that he would take the same conversation with the FIFA president about relocating matches from other host cities, which are part of the 16 locations across North America.

The US is joint hosts the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and Canada. The 48-team event is planned to be held from 11 June to July 19 in the coming year.
