Doris Included in Ireland Selection But Joe McCarthy Omitted

Ireland rugby squad announcement update

Newly reappointed head coach Andy Farrell has selected captain Caelan Doris in his Ireland squad for the autumn internationals, but lock McCarthy is absent.

Doris, who has not played since undergoing shoulder surgery in early May, recently returned to Leinster training, but it remains unclear whether he will be fit to play against New Zealand in the US on November 1.

Lock McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after not recovering from the foot injury he sustained during the opening Lions Test against the Wallabies in July.

Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash also miss out because of fitness concerns, while number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after having hip surgery following the summer tour.

Leinster prop McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole new player in the 34-player squad, but the Irish Rugby Football Union states uncapped Munster pair Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped western province winger Bolton will head to the US as "backup".

After facing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a rematch of their previous encounter, Ireland host the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world title holders South Africa in Dublin.

"There's an exciting look to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran players and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to Georgia and Portugal," commented the coach, back to Ireland duty after a break to lead the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely familiar-looking squad, Leinster's Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will again vie for the first-choice number 10 spot. The fly-half role is still up for grabs, with the two players poised to play against each other for the first time in Saturday's United Rugby Championship match at Croke Park.

Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half chosen as Farrell deciding not to calling up the province's Harry Byrne.

At scrum-half, Farrell has selected Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Casey, who led Ireland to the summer Test victories over the Lelos and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a recall for the western province's Blade, chosen to club-mate Ben Murphy.

Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey form an veteran cohort of midfield options. Osborne is another option in the midfield, but the youngster is also a frontrunner to cover for Keenan at number 15.

Wingers Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. The winger shone on his first Ireland outings over the summer with a brace each in the victories over the Lelos and the Lobos.

Paddy McCarthy is the only new name in the Ireland pack. The front rower has started two of Leinster's three United Rugby Championship games this season and played in the second string's loss by the English in Bristol previously.

The 22-year-old was selected in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer selection, but did not receive a cap.

Southern province lock Thomas Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those Tests, is kept in the squad, and veteran Northern province lock Henderson returns after sitting out the summer tour.

Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests over the summer, is poised to deputise for the captain should the captain fails to recover fitness soon enough to face New Zealand.

The Ireland squad will assemble in the capital on the start of the week before flying to the US on Tuesday.
