McLaren Attributes Crash to Competitors for Team-Mate Crash
One tire flies off the car of Lando Norris after he made contact with team-mate Oscar Piastri at the start of the US GP sprint event.
McLaren Formula 1 leaders Brown and Andrea Stella attributed competitors for the incident between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris at the beginning of the United States Grand Prix sprint race.
The Australian driver, ahead of his teammate in the standings by 22 points, made contact with his fellow McLaren driver after hitting the Hulkenberg.
The collision eliminated both team drivers from the race, along with the Alonso, who was on the inner side of Hulkenberg.
Team Executives Voice Frustration Over Crash
Brown, the team's chief executive officer, told Sky Sports that some of the racing at the front was "amateur hour", adding: "Obviously Nico made contact with Piastri and he had no reason being where he was."
The team boss Stella commented: "Our feeling is that we are disappointed that we didn't have the chance to race."
"It is unexpected that some drivers with a lot of experience fail to act with justful prudence. Go to the first corner, make sure you don't damage other drivers and carry on."
The team indicated that the team principal was mentioning both the Sauber driver and the Aston Martin driver.
Differing Perspectives on the Crash
Nevertheless, 1996 world champion Hill, commentating for a sports broadcast, said he believed the Australian had not shown enough awareness of the risks of the opening turn of an F1 race when he decided to move inside to try to pass his teammate.
The Australian had a stronger launch than Norris and initially competed on the outer side on the ascending approach to the corner.
But he then cut back in an attempt to get a advantage on his teammate on the exit, only to collide with Hulkenberg.
Driver Reactions After the Incident
Piastri said: "Less than perfect but I did not see what occurred, I tried to move inside on Lando and we were both very far from the apex and then got a hit and it sent me into Lando. A shame."
Norris said: "I just got hit, right? I did nothing wrong. Further back events unfolded and I just got unlucky and was struck because of it. I am unsure. I need to look a bit more thoroughly. It's more drivers further back just being a bit reckless and we are the result of that."
The Aston Martin driver said: "At one point I believed I was in the right place on the inner side, but some cars came very quickly from the outside changing direction and then I was there in the center."
Hulkenberg, who had earned a best qualifying fourth place, said: "Big frustrations. All the good work from yesterday in the trash. Just chaotic."
"Piastri steered inward pretty aggressively trying to get the undercut and way out of the first corner but I cannot vanish."
"I had Alonso challenge on the inner side and I was unable to see him any more. I aimed to provide room for him and then Piastri turned in and the contact was inevitable."
Aftermath and McLaren's Reaction
McLaren will analyze the crash with their drivers but only after the event weekend. Both vehicles needed extensive work before grand prix qualifying at 10 PM BST on the weekend.
Stella said: "Overall displeased but we accept it, we are now focusing on fixing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will resume the weekend from there."
"Our team holds a strong position from our performance point of view so I trust we have the possibility to race, compete fairly and capitalise on our performance."
"Championship points are the most important thing, I don't want to talk about mal-intent, just caution. A little more care would be beneficial for everyone."
Championship Implications
The race was won by the Max Verstappen, who gained ground on both McLaren drivers in the championship - he is now 55 points behind the Australian and thirty-three adrift of Norris.
The team boss said: "The implication is what the numbers show - we lost eight points with both drivers, but we focus on ourselves. We have a highly capable car and two strong drivers. We look forward to just some normal racing."
The Red Bull driver said he was approaching the title race one event at a time.
