The City of Seattle's Pride Celebrations to Proceed for World Cup Despite Objections by Iran and Egypt
Arrangements to hold LGBTQ+ rights events and activities in Seattle amid the upcoming World Cup will continue unabated, despite the Egyptian and Iranian football federations voiced strong concerns regarding a planned “Pride Match.”
Stadium Policy Alongside City Celebrations
Seattle's planning committee stated clearly they are “moving forward as planned” with Pride activities outside the stadium. This coincides with the Group G fixture featuring Egypt and Iran on 26 June. Furthermore, the tournament's governing body will permit Pride flags inside the stadium.
“In our role as hosts, SeattleFWC26’s role is to get the city ready to host the matches and manage the fan activities beyond the match venue,” said the vice-president of communications.
Cultural Background Behind the Formal Complaints
Same-sex relations are criminalized in Iran, and in Egypt, public decency statutes are frequently employed to prosecute LGBTQ+ people. The Egyptian federation declared it refused to be associated with events that “directly contradict the cultural, religious and social values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” In a parallel move, the head of Iran's soccer body also raised “objections against the issue.”
FIFA's Stance on Symbols
The international federation holds operational control over match venues on matchdays. Although its rules forbid political signage with political messages, it permits flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” which explicitly includes the rainbow flag. This policy was in effect at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reinforced after incidents of flags being seized.
